In the wardrobe of... Ashley Ward

Hello readers!

For the next few blog posts (3 more) I will be showing you the fashion of my friends. I admire the hell out of their style and how their clothing is very much an extension of their personalities. These are ladies I take fashion cues from, probably without their knowledge, all the time. Get a glimpse inside the closets of some wonderful women!

First up!

Ashley Ward - The Trend Setter

I chose Ashley because her style is so much a part of who she is and it's constantly changing, or rather evolving, and she always looks amazing. Ashley is one of those girls who could wake up and throw on an oversized t-shirt and still look like gold, she just has that quality about her, and good looks a la Kate Moss too, and her style comes off looking effortless.

Ashley admitted to finding ideas for her fashion from places like lookbook, the website dedicated to fashion forward people around the world- where they can post pictures of their latest fashion creations. This makes sense considering I've rarely seen Ashley wear the same outfit twice and the pieces she chooses are often of the moment or ahead of the moment- hence why I have dubbed her the trend setter.

Ashley seems willing to try just about anything fashion wise and taking risks with fashion is something I commend anyone for. From the sleek black dress below (worn with red lipstick) to flowy dresses and jean jackets, Ashley's style is eclectic, taking just enough from everywhere and pulling it all together to make it her own.

Here's a peak at some of Ashley's outfits (sorry if the pictures are slightly blurry!)

As Of Late...

This is a list of all the things I have been enjoying lately. With the warmer weather keeping us hot and lazy during the days, I have had time to take note of a few fashion trends I'm eager to get behind and a few I may just love all on my own. This isn't just about fashion, but everything I have been taking in and that makes summer feel just that much closer. Enjoy!
  • Beautiful nails
I have been coveting this bright blue nail polish I've seen a girl in my class wearing. I have looked in a few Shoppers for it, but no luck just yet. I'm on the hunt!My friend just started wearing this adorable lavender nail polish that will be perfect for the summer.

  • Lipstick
I absolutely love my MAC blood red lipstick (however, it really isn't blood red it's a dark pink and it's gorgeous!) This was a limited edition with them, but if you can still get your hands on one do it! It's such a great color.

  • Gold Eyeshadow
I love gold for anything, but for eyeshadow I can't get enough. I have a few shades, I have to say finding a nice one is difficult, many are too yellow and some are too beige or bronzey... it takes some looking around. I think this looks really great in the summer, and especially with a sun kissed tan.

  • Market Jewelry
I was recently visiting my parents and was looking through the market in front of their house and found so many beautiful pieces of jewelry! This just proves you don't need to pay an arm and a leg to get great looking pieces. Watch out for those special pieces and keep an eye on quality. I like to stick to wooden jewelry in the market mostly.

  • Coca-cola
Well when do I not love pop? However, an ice cold coke on a hot day is really the best. I also love Stewart's Black Cherry Soda. Yummmmm.

  • Flask
I recently got my first flask, an old one of my dad's he said I could have, and am in love with it! They aren't just for winter, I say break out the flask all year round! Packing a picnic? Bring the flask! Now if I could just find a garter to strap my flask to my leg with I'd be all set...

  • Band tees
Yeah, I know... Kristen Stewart...
But the focus is on her shirt, a band tee of The Clash ! I find it hard to find band tees for girls of too many different bands (I can't count the number of Ramones and Blondie shirts I've seen and have owned, and they're awesome bands...but you only need so many of them). I recently got a sewing machine so I plan on taking in some of the guy's band tees I've acquired over the years and making them fit me a little better.

  • Tie Dye
I've been trying to plan a day to tie dye with some girlfriends, because not only is this such an easy way to update an old tee (or pretty much any article of clothing) it's so fun to get together with some friends and do. (I'll bring the flask of course!)

  • Jean Jacket
I've always loved jean jackets, and I have a jean vest that I had been searching for for what felt like forever. Jean jackets seem to be bigger this year though, at least for spring. I was recently in Banana Republic (they have a petites section) and I found a short, dark denim jacket and it fit like a glove, plus it was 60% off, so I clearly bought it! I do like the acid wash, lived in look on occasion, but I prefer to stay with the darker denim.
Kim Kardashian rocking a jean jacket.

  • Patterned Pants
These floral pair remind me of a pair I saw at H&M and was dying to buy but I didn't really have the cash and I still don't have the legs for.

This zebra pair is my favorite, I've seen a few pairs that I've been keeping an eye on for when my bank account starts to flow (or well at least trickles..) I'd love to pair either the floral or the zebra with a band tee, fur vest and an updo. It could be fabulous or fabulously trashy, I haven't decided.

  • Silver ankle boots
I'm pretty sure this infatuation started the other night when a few girlfriends and I watched Clueless and there's a scene with Brittany Murphy's character wearing silver Docs. I would settle for knock offs, though this one would be ideal.

  • Summer soundtrack
Every season needs one! Lately I've been going back to The Beach Boys and Otis Redding. The Beach Boys scream summer and feel good tunes, so I suggest cranking them up while getting ready in the mornings.

And there's diamonds and pearls in your hair

Well hello hello!

So I've gotten some guff for not posting in a while, this is due to midterms and well.... sheer laziness, I must admit. However, here is a long awaited post, sure to disappoint! I wanted to make a post of two women who completely amaze and inspire me. These women happen to have some of the wildest fashion I have ever seen or heard of. They are from completely different periods in time, however they both share a penchant for the bizarre. Beginning with...
  • Marchesa Luisa Casati
This woman is a new discovery to me. I stumbled upon her when I saw the exquisite painting done of her by Augustus John hanging at the AGO. She lived from 1881-1957 and continues to inspire designers to this day such as Karl Lagerfeld and the founders of the fashion brand Marchesa, which took her name for their label. The Marchesa fancied the macabre and above all decadence.

Here's a brief list of her wonderful eccentricities:
-Wore live snakes for jewelry
-Buried in fake eyelashes
-Once spattered herself with chicken blood for a party
-Walked her cheetahs on diamond studded leashes
-Walked around in furs, naked underneath

The list really does go on. This woman was not afraid to be completely over the top, and for most of her life she had the money to do so. I really can't do her justice in a blog post, but if anyone is curious about her look her up or check out the book "The Marchesa Casati: Portraits of a Muse"

This is the Augustus John painting of her that originally caught my eye. She was known for having flaming red hair, pale white skin, and large green eyes.

Here we see the Marchesa with one of her many crystal balls, her wild eyes rimmed with kohl.

Here is the Marchesa dressed up for one of her many infamous parties.

Here is Georgina Chapman, one of the women who founded the Marchesa brand, chanelling the style of the woman who inspired her.

Secondly, we have a woman who is a current media craze and has been all over the place for her music and her fashion. None other than...

  • Lady Gaga
She was recently quoted as saying that Lady Gaga isn't a character, it's who she really is. Whether or not you believe this, doesn't really matter. She provides such stimulating eye candy for the public and finally brings something unique to music and to fashion. She isn't quite as refined as the Marchesa, however she does seem to take some bigger fashion risks, here are a few of my favorite...

I love the antlers, honestly I wish I had a pair.

Lobsters always make me think of Salvador Dali's phone, but this one appears to be jewel encrusted. Would you expect anything less?

Experimenting with hair dye is a wonderful thing and we see her do this here in a big way.

A little less flamboyant here, none the less interesting.

These women are who I think of when I get dressed for a night out or even in the mornings. Although, these outfits are more like costumes and in a time of economic depression it is not wise to be frivolous, but even adopting this attitude of fearlessness when it comes to fashion is important for every woman. Confidence is key. I hope that every woman can take a little bit of this wild style into her own closet. Feel inspired, ladies!

I love you more than I did when you were mine

Hello hello there my lovely readers!

So this post is long over due and yet sort of premature. This is about spring fashion, I just need something to help me deal with this bitterly cold weather. So these looks may not all be accessible just yet but in the next few months I hope to see some fabulous ladies rocking them. I have divided them into classic and modern, although some even allude me a little as to where they should fall. Some are also old favorite with modern spins. As you may have guessed, I love vintage fashion, so I love a classic style.

Here are my predictions for the future! (...meaning this is what I will be wearing in the near future ha)

CLASSIC:
  • Beret:
To be honest this look took me a while to come around to, but now that I have I can't get enough. I bought a leopard print beret from H&M and just love it. This look is really great for fall and spring, because it gives a little warmth and is stylish, whereas in winter it doesn't provide nearly enough warmth (I learned this the hard way, the beret was my undoing and led to a two week flu).If you aren't fully convinced about the beret here's a rare photo of Marilyn Monroe in a leopard print one herself. She wore some in her films, the ones that come to mind are Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire. This is where my inspiration came from and I bought the leopard print one featured above and then I saw this photo and it made me love it even more.

  • Flower Pin:
There's nothing really new about pining a flower pin or brooch to one's coat, however, thanks to Sex and the City's brilliant designer Pat Field, the flower has been blown up larger than life and usually in vibrant colors. This champagne colored one would be great with a bold printed dress. Also sometimes these pins double as hair pins, so if you're feeling adventurous this would look great for a night on the town.

  • Scarf:
I wasn't sure if this would better be labeled a neckerchief. Either way, this is a hard look to pull off. It seems simple, but you could either look very chic or very much like a flight attendant. I think a brightly patterned scarf with little black dress could look great. I was personally thinking one of those turtleneck tank top style tops (in black) tucked into a high-waisted, black pencil skirt with some red lipstick and heels. I think this is great for spring because you have the scarf accessory that always looks good without having a heavy, wool scarf. It's simple and elegant.

  • Locket:
I may have mentioned how much I love lockets before, I got one from my parents for xmas (thanks mom and dad!). I especially love them with long chains, they're classy and classic. You really can't go wrong with a locket. I don't have too many dos and don'ts for a locket, except don't mix silver and gold.

Now here's a combination of two of my many great loves a locket and a pocket watch. A wonderfully stylish friend of mine was wearing one of these today and I knew I had to include it.

  • Trench Coat:
This is my favorite for spring. This look is coming back and fast. This is such a classic look, think Jackie O (who I have included a picture of below). This is one of those items EVERY girl should have in her closet. This look NEVER goes out of style, despite not always being trendy (this is distinction many women need to learn how to make). There are a variety of colors to choose from, however I stuck with the classic beige (or khaki). Also, if you find a good quality one it will fit you like a glove and last forever.

Jackie looking fabulous as she often did.

  • White evening gloves:
So these seem like they'd be more a winter item, however I think black for winter and white for a warmer season. These are elegant for a night out or even just for fun. This pair is particularly fancy, but you can find some that are a little less fancy. I found a cute pair in a vintage shop the other day and I'm kicking myself for not buying them, and I would make a trip back but I have spent my share in the past few days.

MODERN:
  • Hot Pink Lipstick:
There are many shades you can wear in the spring and summer that are colorful and gorgeous, however I love this hot pink color called Impassioned by MAC. I bought it last summer and only wore it a few times, but every time I have I always question why I don't wear it more often. I think I'm normally stumped as to what to wear with it. I think now though that a fun little party dress in a sea foam green with some big, playful pearls would be great. Any ideas would be appreciated too!!
  • Hair Dye:
I think for this coming season fun and quirky hair is a must. I'd love to see more girls having fun with hair dye, some fuchsias and light blues (turquoise mainly) would be great. I've had both colors as streaks in my hair and they're great and can look really nice if you know what you want.

  • Pop art floral prints:
I'm thinking rather than wear the same, tired floral patterns for dresses put a pop art spin on it. I'm tired of seeing pastel flowers, I'd like to see some really eye catching colors. This is a Warhol piece and I think it would be a wonderful inspiration for a dress pattern.

  • Over the knee socks:
I'm pretty sure I've talked about these before for winter, and I may have even used this picture, however I think they're great for spring and even fall. They can be worn over sheer tights, or as I will be doing with my new ones (they were part of the shopping spree!) over leopard print tights. I like dark grays, black and navy for them. They look great in ankle boots (as seen below) or in higher boots. This look is easy and I really think pretty much anyone could pull this off and look fashionable. Give it a try, ladies!

I do want to start doing weekly Fashion Dos and Don'ts. I have been really sick (I think in part thanks to the ill timing of my beret wearing) so I have just been trying to catch up on school and on life. There will be more posts coming your way in the future!

"You can't fight in here, this is the war room!"

This post is dedicated to my new found fashion obsession- the brooch!

This little piece can add something special to even the dullest outfits. It's also unique in that there are so many different ones to choose from and not many people, except from older generations, wear them anymore. Here are some I found that I absolutely fell in love with and if I had the money I would run out and buy myself one right now. But alas, it's Xmas time (I realize this is not necessarily the most politically correct thing to say, but it is much simpler than acknowledging all other religions, so fuck it ;) ) and that means a time for giving (and not to myself as I have yet to realize).

I'm trying to show different styles of brooches, but this post is by no means the be all end all of brooches. There are so many to choose from! So liven up this season by adding a classy brooch to your favorite holiday garb!

-The Jeweled Brooch
This beauty is one of my favorites! Most of the jeweled brooches I've seen are in a circular shape, some have designs - this one almost looks floral- and some are just beautiful stones placed nicely, but with no real pattern in mind. It should be noted, that I have a penchant for anything shiny, big and flashy so any item I gush about will probably fall under one, if not all three, of the aforementioned categories.

-The Cameo Brooch
This is probably the most popular style of brooch. My mother recently gave me her old cameo brooch, and it is stunning! (Thanks, mom). You'll often see that sort of peachy color to the background, or sometimes black - which I prefer but when it comes to free things, it's hard to be picky ha. What I love about this old favorite is the fact that the setting around it is usually different and that's what really makes it. Some aren't as ornate as this, but rather a little more delicate. The cameo is actually incredibly popular for any piece of jewelry and I have been seeing a lot of it lately, so perhaps it's on the way back in (although to be honest, cameos never actually go out of style). I have a cameo ring my sister bought me years ago, also and it's quite beautiful.

Here's a modern spin on the classic cameo. I rather like skulls (in moderation or else you turn out looking like a hardened biker- and not in the sexy way).

-The Insect/Animal Brooch
This seems to be a really popular design. I have seen quite a few tiger's heads, dragonflies, and lizards as of late. My personal favorite out of these three is the peacock probably because it's my favorite bird (as the half sleeve of a peacock on my left arm can attest to). I've also been getting into jewelry with owls on it. This is a trend Forever 21 is perpetuating and I can't get enough.

-The Face Brooch
I've always adored the lady face brooches or pins. I haven't found too many, but I've been scouring. The ones that I like the most are the profile views, but this one is lovely too. The one underneath I picked because it looks like a brooch of Buddha's face, and I love Indian art.

-The Pearl Brooch
Pearls are classic and brooches are classic, so it seems only natural that the two work together wonderfully. This one is particular stunning with the larger pearls.

-The Food Brooch
This is one I've seen pretty much everywhere (I actually watched Julie & Julia - not of my own volition- and Julie wears a lobster brooch at one point. She actually wears a lot of brooches). However, the grapes is the one I've seen the most often so here is the nicest one I could find. Not a personal favorite, but still popular nonetheless.

-The Floral Brooch
I just bought a very similar brooch for myself (I know, I know I said it was Xmas time but it was 6 bucks!). I love it, it's on my coat right now but I have put it on a vest to spruce it up not too long ago and it looked so nice! It really added some extra color to a plain outfit.

-My favorite Brooch
This one is probably my favorite, simply because it has turquoise stones in it. I LOVE turquoise and anything that has it I will likely go nuts over.

Coming next is my blog for all you t-shirt and jeans girls. This will give you some simple tips to make your look a little more stylish, while retaining the same level of comfort.

- To give credit where credit is due, I must say this new love was inspired by my friend Megan, who was wearing a gorgeous brooch one night I saw her. Thanks for the inspiration Meg!-
